Join Us for a Civil Rights Journey Through the South
What can we learn when we walk the same streets, cross the same bridges and stand in the same sacred spaces where history was made?
From Nov. 5-8, Temple Emanu-El members are invited to join Rabbi Kimberly Herzog Cohen for a powerful Civil Rights Journey through the South. In partnership with Etgar 36, this immersive experience will take participants through Atlanta, Georgia, and Montgomery, Selma and Birmingham, Alabama, to explore the history, courage and enduring lessons of the Civil Rights Movement.
This journey brings history to life through visits to significant landmarks, including the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice, the Rosa Parks Museum, Ebenezer Baptist Church and the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Along the way, we’ll hear firsthand stories from individuals connected to the movement’s legacy and engage in meaningful conversations about its enduring impact. Through these experiences, we’ll consider how Jewish values can guide us in the ongoing pursuit of justice.
Participants will explore the unique relationship between Jewish identity and the struggle for civil rights. We will learn about the role Jews played in the movement, reflect on our community’s responsibility to confront injustice, and consider how the lessons of the past can inform our actions today.
We’ll walk through history, reflect on its lessons and explore how we can help shape a more just future.
