Sunday Morning Learning

Religious School at the Karla & Larry Steinberg Center for Jewish Learning

On Sunday mornings, students from Kindergarten through 12th grade engage in dynamic Judaica classes, exploring Jewish holidays, ritual symbols, Torah, values, history, heroes, Israel and social justice. Each week includes a lively, musical T’filah (prayer) experience led by our clergy, where students build their prayer skills and take time to reflect in a meaningful and age-appropriate setting. Read below to learn more about what each grade level explores and what a typical Sunday morning looks like for your child.

Kindergarten–2nd Grade

Our youngest learners come together on Sunday mornings from 9–11a.m. for a warm, engaging introduction to Jewish life. Each grade begins the day in their Judaica class and joins our clergy for interactive T’filah (prayer). Throughout the year, students explore age-appropriate themes such as Jewish holidays, Torah stories, symbols, Israel, the synagogue and mitzvot through hands-on activities and discussion. These grades also enjoy a rotation block of specialist that include music, Hebrew, art, library and social justice, making learning both meaningful and fun.

3rd–6th grade

Sunday mornings for 3rd–6th graders begin at 9:00am and offer a rich blend of learning, prayer, and personal choice. Students dive into Judaica through grade-specific themes such as Torah, God, Israel, Jewish values, heroes, lifecycle events and Jewish history, including the Holocaust and the founding of the State of Israel. In addition to classroom learning, students participate in weekly, clergy-led T’filah (prayer) and choose from exciting electives like art, theater, STEM, film, sports and garden—bringing their interests into their Jewish experience. Select grades also enjoy special field trips, such as visiting the Temple Emanu-El Cemetery or the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum.

Please note: Enrollment in both Judaica and a Hebrew program is required for B’nai Mitzvah eligibility, unless your child attends a Jewish day school. Learn more about Temple’s B’nai Mitzvah program here.

7th–9th grade

Our 7th–9th grade program offers a dynamic blend of Jewish learning, teen community and personal exploration every Sunday from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Each session begins with a one-hour Judaica class designed to meet students where they are, with 7th graders using the Moving Traditions curriculum to explore identity, responsibility and Jewish adulthood; 8th graders engaging in Torah and text study through creative modalities; and 9th graders diving into Comparative Religions and Love & Jewish Values, exploring meaningful topics through a Jewish lens. Following class, all teens enjoy a social bagel break and then participate in a rotating activity block featuring electives, guest speakers, teen-led programming, social action and learning with our clergy.

Students are also invited to join our Madrichim or Madrichim-in-Training program begin their day at 9 a.m., building leadership skills by working in classrooms or assisting with programs. Learn more below.

10th Grade – Confirmation

Our 10th Grade Confirmation program invites students to deepen their Jewish learning and reflect on what it means to live a meaningful Jewish life. Meeting Sundays from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., the experience includes both full-group sessions and small group discussions led by Rabbi David Stern, Rabbi Michael Lewis and congregant Mike Sims. Topics include theology, Reform Judaism, Jewish identity and social justice. A key highlight is the L’Taken Seminar in Washington, D.C., where students learn advocacy skills and lobby their representatives on issues they care about. The year culminates in the Confirmation Service. Students in the Madrichim program begin their day at 9 a.m. with leadership training and classroom experience.

8th-12th Grade Madrichim Program

Our Madrichim are teen leaders who serve as role models, classroom assistants and community builders in and out of the classroom. Open to students in 8th–12th grade, the program offers meaningful leadership experience while supporting younger learners and enhancing the Sunday morning experience. Madrichim enrolled in 8th–10th grade Judaica serve from 9–10:30 a.m., while those not in Judaica stay until 11 a.m. Participants may choose to earn community service hours or receive a small stipend for their work. Rising 7th graders interested in the program can join our Madrichim-in-Training track and transition into full roles during the year.
