Rabbi Kimberly Herzog Cohen was born and raised in Los Angeles. After graduating with honors from Carleton College in 2001, where she braved cold Minnesota winters and received a B.A in History, Rabbi Herzog Cohen moved to the East Coast. Seeking to immerse herself in rabbinic texts, she studied at Drisha, a modern orthodox yeshiva in Manhattan. Following Drisha, Rabbi Herzog Cohen moved to Boston and participated in the Jewish Organizing Initiative, received a Masters of Jewish Studies from Hebrew College, and worked at several area synagogues.

Ordained in May of 2011 at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City, Rabbi Herzog Cohen served as a student rabbi at East End Temple in Manhattan; Temple Adath Yeshurun in Aiken, SC; Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, CA; Just Congregations, an initiative of the URJ; and as a chaplain intern at NYU Langone Medical Center. She wrote her rabbinic thesis, Illuminating Sacred Space: Integrating Star Symbolism into Synagogue Art and Design, under the direction of Dr. Lawrence Hoffman.

Rabbi Herzog Cohen is committed to the sacred work of building relational communities, where Jewish meaning, spiritual vibrancy, and tikkun olam are core values. She brings this commitment into all her responsibilities at Temple Emanu-El, which include serving as rabbinic liaison to Sh’ma Emanu-El, our small groups initiative, and Just Congregations, our community organizing effort.

Rabbi Herzog Cohen is married to Rabbi Michael Cohen who is the Director of rabbinical services and programs for The Legacy Senior Communities. They are parents of twins. The four of them can often be found exploring the great outdoors of Arbor Hills Nature Reserve or other local parks.
