Social Justice Council

Department Mission Statement:
Temple Emanu-El’s Social Justice Council strives to make Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World) pervasive throughout the congregation and equal to Torah (learning) and Avodah (worship) in the hearts and minds of our congregation. Our social justice initiatives involve the entire congregation and give our members a strong sense of community, common purpose, and shared activity.

The role of the Social Justice Council is to:

• Be the decision‐making group for all social justice activities throughout Temple, including the evaluation of existing and new opportunities.

• Coordinate and communicate social justice efforts throughout Temple, providing opportunities for both advocacy and service projects to Temple members.

• Allocate funds given by Temple to various social service organizations.

The Social Justice Council is charged with bringing before the congregation timely information on significant social problems. Council members encourage Temple members to deal with such issues through community religious and secular education, volunteerism, and financial support. The Social Justice Council serves as a resource to the Board of Directors when there is a need for statements, advocacy, or actions to be made in the area of social concerns.
