Hineini: Building Reform Synagogues in Israel

Funds donated as part of Hineini will support Kehilat Birkat Shalom - located at Kibbutz Gezer between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and Darchei Noam in Ramat HaSharon – located in a Tel Aviv subdivision.

Kehilat Birkat Shalom is a congregation of approximately 70 families.  Its rabbi is Miri Gold, who has been in the forefront of challenging in the Israeli courts the practice of government funding for only Orthodox communities. This congregation warmly welcomed the travelers from Temple for services in its outdoor sanctuary this past summer.  Kehilat Birkat Shalom desires to establish a nursery school, continue the work they are now doing with South American and Russian immigrants - and one day have their own synagogue building, as they now meet either outdoors or in a one-room building with 60 seats. This congregation has numerous young families. www.kbyonline.org/birkatshalom

Darchei Noam was started about 20 years ago by American olim who preferred an alternative to participating in High Holy Days services in an Orthodox synagogue.  Joined by many progressive minded sabras, this congregation now numbers about 400 members.  Recently, the synagogue won an 18 year legal battle against the local religious council that refused to grant them a plot of land on which to build a synagogue.  In Ramat HaSharon there are approximately 60 Orthodox synagogues, some with as few as 15 members.  Darchei Noam continues to meet in a high school auditorium, but recently broke ground on the land finally allotted to the synagogue; construction of a new synagogue recently commenced. www.kbyonline.org/darchei_noam

An opportunity to connect, an obligation to support

By raising funds for the construction of synagogue buildings for Kehilat Birkat Shalom and Darchei Noam, our congregation can help provide spiritual homes for these communities while building lasting bonds between their congregations and ours.

For just $18 per year for two years, you can make the construction of synagogues for these two Progressive congregations a reality. If at least half of our member families join the Hineini project, we can become a Builder Congregation in this important effort.

Help promote the Reform Movement in Israel and become part of a community where you will always be welcomed and where you can pray and experience Israeli Reform Judaism in a building you have helped construct.
