Yom Kippur Study

Study, Talk, Listen, Act
Thursday, October 9 • 12:30-2:30 p.m. • Linz Hall

"Is this the fast that I look for? A day of self-affliction?...Is this what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? Is not this the fast that I look for: to unlock the shackles of injustice, to undo the fetters of bondage, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every cruel chain?"
Isaiah 58 in Gates of Repentance, pg. 347

Join members of Temple Emanu-El's Just Congregations project for a unique and enriching Yom Kippur study session. During this two hour session we will study text and discover how the lessons of Yom Kippur can attain ongoing meaning in our lives. In large and small group settings, we will explore how our own experiences and stories can help us build relationships and lead us to deeper levels of engagement. Along the way we will discover what issues are deeply and widely felt in our community and learn how we can work together to repair our world. High school youth are encouraged to participate. There will be a DAFTY led component of the Yom Kippur Study.

Just Congregations is an exhilarating new effort to build upon Temple's long tradition of commitment to social justice in Dallas, while building a sense of community within our congregation at the same time. Just Congregations begins with our own stories - the sharing with one another of our personal concerns about the world and how we live in it. We identify shared concerns and then move into conversation with other faith groups in Dallas to build bridges of cooperation and coalition; bridges that can produce powerful and shared advocacy and action on the issues central to our lives and the well-being of our city and its citizens.
