High Holy Day Service Descriptions

Olan Sanctuary Services, Evening and Daytime
Experience the beauty of the High Holy Days, as we participate in worship with our rabbis, cantor and our wonderful Temple Emanu-El Choir. Full of warmth, energy and spirituality, these services bring depth and meaning to our sacred texts, as we celebrate together using the Gates of Repentance prayer book.

Young Adult Rosh Hashanah Service and Reception
Young adults, ages 21-39, married and single, are invited to join us for Rosh Hashanah worship and celebration. The service, led by Rabbi Kimberly Herzog Cohen, begins at 8:15 p.m. in Pollman Hall and is followed by an Apple Martini Reception at 9:30 p.m. in Linz Hall. Young Adults attending services with their families are encouraged to join the Young Adult Reception in Linz Hall. Please show your High Holy Days admission card to gain access to Temple for services and the reception.

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Services for familes with School-Age Children
Families with children in grades 2 through 6 are encouraged to attend these daytime services in Pollman Hall. This experience will utilize informal liturgy, participatory music and an interactive learning opportunity connected with the theme of the Yamim Nora’im (The Ten Days of Repentance).

Yom Kippur Teen Experience
Back for our second year, this engaging teen-centered and teen-led experience incorporates prayer, music, conversation and activity. This collaboration of our teen leadership, Rabbis Ross and Herzog Cohen, Student Cantor Niren and Steve Buchalter is sure to suit the needs of all those in grades 8-12.

Service for Young Children and Their Families
Designed specifically for families with young children (under age 7), this joyful holiday experience uses stories and songs to celebrate this sweet and solemn time of year. Led by Rabbis Allenberg and Ross and Shelly Sender, adults and children alike should expect a unique holiday celebration.

Yom Kippur Afternoon Study
Study, Stretch and Share: Accessing the Still Small Voice Within
Taught and Facilitated by Temple Members
Saturday, Oct. 8, 12:30 - 2:30 p.m., Linz Hall
Session 1 - 12:30 -1:30 p.m. | Session 2 - 1:30-2:30 p.m.
(Each session will run twice.)

Yom Kippur is a day of personal reflection when we ask ourselves significant questions about the choices we make and the people we are becoming. Join your fellow community members in exploring our tradition through study, attuning ourselves to the sometimes silenced messages of our own bodies with movement, or sharing and listening to one another’s stories about trying to live the ideal life. Take some time between our morning and afternoon services to study, stretch and share.

Congregational Break-the-Fast
A congregational Break-the-Fast will follow the concluding service in the Nasher Family Atrium. (Rain location is Linz Hall.)

Additional Service Information:

  • Important Announcement: Temple Emanu-El clergy would like to provide a quiet and spiritual environment in the Olan Sanctuary during all worship services. This will enable congregants to worship peacefully. Temple ushers, admission card takers and staff have been asked to only let people in the Olan Sanctuary for the second service at the conclusion of the earlier worship services. This may necessitate remaining outside or in the hallway until the earlier worship service is concluded. The Olan Sanctuary and Tobian Auditorium foyer will be kept clear until it is time for congregants to take their seats for the next service. Your understanding and cooperation is greatly appreciated.
  • All Olan Sanctuary services are open to Temple members and their children ages 7 years and older except for the Yizkor Memorial Service on Yom Kippur Day, for which children must be at least 10 years old.
  • If you plan to travel during the High Holy Days, contact the Temple business office to obtain a URJ Courtesy Request Form. This will allow you to attend services at a URJ-member synagogue in the city you are visiting.
  • Out-of-town college students who are children of Temple members may attend services at other URJ-member synagogues by obtaining a URJ Courtesy Request Form. Similarly, Temple Emanu-El offers Olan Sanctuary services admission to local college students unable to travel home for the High Holy Days. Please contact the Temple office for details.
  • Temple members and guests may attend High Holy Days services in the Lefkowitz Chapel, which are a live audio/video feed of the services in the Olan Sanctuary. Admission cards may be obtained in person from the Temple business office one week prior to services. Please call the Temple office for more information.
  • Please note: Temple Emanu-El will be closed on Wednesday, September 28 and Friday, October 7 as we prepare for the High Holy Days services. Temple will open at 4:00 p.m. on these dates for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services.
  • In general seating, a reasonable number of seats may be saved for your immediate family until 15 minutes prior to the start of services.
  • Temple will offer sign language interpretations at two Olan Sanctuary worship services. Please call Rick Rosenberg at 214.706.0000
