The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai
June 3, 2008 Jemubhai Patel, a Cambridge-educated Indian judge has retired from serving a country he finds "too messy for justice." He lives with his cook, his seventeen year old granddaughter, and a red setter. The tranquility of his existence is contrasted with the life of the cook's son, working in grimy Manhatten restaurants, and with his granddaugher's affair with a Nepali tutor involved in an insurgency that irrevocably alters Jemubhai's life.
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
August 5, 2008
Set in Afghanistan, the story covers three decades of anti-Soviet jihad, civil war, and Taliban tyranny through the lives of two women. Mariam is the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy businessman, forced at age fifteen into marrying the forty year old Rasheed, who grows increasingly brutal as she fails to produce a child. Eighteen years later, Rasheed takes another wife, fourteen year old Laila, a girl whose only other options are prostitution or starvation. Against a backdrop of unending war, Mariam and Laila become allies in an asymmetrical battle with Rasheed.
