Preserving the Pillars of our Faith: Endowing the Future of Temple Emanu-El

Past generations of leaders have built Temple Emanu-El and made it one of the largest and most distinguished Reform Jewish congregations in the world. It is the challenge of this generation to preserve and to strengthen what past generations have built. It is critical that we build the capacity to thrive now to ensure that our children and grandchildren will have the same firm commitment to Judaism and its ethical values as our ancestors did before us. Our obligation is to leave tomorrow’s legacy strong.

The Temple Emanu-El Foundation was created in March of 2000 to provide asset protection and a better investment vehicle for Temple’s endowment funds. This foundation is a separate 501 c 3 organization with a separate Board of Trustees.

In January of 2001, Temple Emanu-El launched an Endowment Campaign which culminated in September of 2002 with “The Time of Your Life” celebration event. This successful campaign added pledges of contributions to be paid over approximately the next five years as well as planned gifts in congregant’s estates. When the campaign began, the Endowment Fund for Temple Emanu-El was approximately $5 million. Over $17.5 million was pledged in the Endowment Campaign.

While the campaign has concluded, the efforts to build Temple’s endowment will continue. The goal now is to increase the number of Planned Gifts to benefit the Temple Emanu-El Foundation.

Congregants who include a gift to benefit Temple in their estate plans will be recognized in the Bea Goldman Covenant Society. This society was named for Beatrice Goldman who was a member of Temple for more than 50 years, and made Temple a priority in her life and at her death.

Please consult your legal and/or financial advisor about including Temple in your estate plans with a bequest, a charitable trust, life insurance policy or other appropriate vehicle. An Advisory Committee of financial professionals is available to answer questions and discuss the benefits of making Temple a beneficiary in your estate plans. For more information, to schedule a meeting with a member of the advisory committee or to notify us of a gift to the Temple Emanu-El Foundation in your estate plans, please call Patsy Goodman, Development Director at Temple, 214.706.0000 ext.122.
