Throughout the year, join the Temple Emanu-El clergy in a dynamic study and six part series entitled “Shabbat in Many Dimensions.” As our Torah says, “Remember the Sabbath, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8). An essential practice in the sacred rhythm of time, Shabbat has shaped many aspects of Judaism.

Sukkot Lunch & Learn, Tuesday, Oct. 18, Noon : The Sukkah on the Camel’s Back
During the seven day holiday of Sukkot, we are commanded to dwell in temporary shelters known as sukkot. “Dwelling” in this case could mean sharing meals in the sukkah and it could also mean living in the sukkah. Since we spend so much time in our sukkot, it has become common practice to decorate the sukkah with fruits or vegetables hanging from the ceiling and paper chains draping the walls. But have you ever thought about building your sukkah on the back of a camel? Or what about using the camel as one of the walls of the sukkah? Though there are rules and regulations dictating how we can build our sukkot, they are not as straightforward as you might think. Using Talmudic text, we will spend time as a group and in chevruta studying these interesting and unique rules about building a sukkah. Join Rabbi Amy Ross on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at noon.

Bring your own lunch. Drinks and dessert will be provided by the Women of Reform Judaism.

Six Words Loaded with Jewish Meaning
There are words which evoke meaning in terms of large concepts. In the lectures and discussions for this series we will examine such words both from the standpoint of Jewish tradition and modern Jewish thinkers. Hopefully our deliberations will provide insight into the evolution of Jewish thought.

Myth: Does myth simply imply that which is not true?

Dogma: How does this square with modern ideas of autonomy?

Redemption: Is repentance a necessary precursor?

Education: How essential is it to understanding a Jewish outlook?

Theodicy: Is this just an attempt to justify the Biblical God?

Exegesis: Are all interpretations of text equally valid?

Come join the group; one need not be a senior to enjoy these explorations.
