The ABCs of What Brotherhood Is All About Eighty years ago, the Temple leadership organized a men's club for the avowed purpose of assisting in the community. From generation to generation, a long lineage of dedicated Temple members have committed their time and service to the congregation and the community. These are the ABC's of what the Temple Emanu-El Brotherhood is all about. A is for Achievements and Awards: We've participated in more activities, been written up more times, and received more recognition awards than any other Brotherhood in the country. B is for Blood Drives that Brotherhood organizes twice a year. C is for CHAI House where we provide meals and serve Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner. D is for the DAFTY, whose activities benefit from Brotherhood’s fundraising efforts. E is for Education: Our Breakfasts with the Rabbi on the 4th Wednesday of the month that teach us “What we never learned in religious school but want to know now. F is for the Friendship and Fellowship that we develop with each other. G is for Golden Acres: Where we conduct Friday night services for the elderly on a regular basis. H is for High Holy Days (and also for Harry Kabler and Jamie Hayden) ushering and assisting in access to services for the physically challenged. I is for Informative Sunday Breakfasts with major city figures like Police Chief Ben Click and Mayor Laura Miller and sports personalities like Brotherhood member Brad Sham. J is for the Jewish Chautauqua Society, supported by Brotherhood that teaches people of other faiths about Judaism. K is for Kitchen Crew, ably headed by Al Herzmark that provides meals for Bryan’s House, CHAI House, Jonathan’s House, Girls, Inc., and the Vogel Alcove. L is for the Leo Fruhman Fund: Established by Rhea Fay Fruhman, benefiting youth activities. M is for the Holiday Mitzvah Program relieving Christian workers so they may spend Christmas with their families. Note that this program was begun in Dallas 20 years ago by the then Brotherhood president, Harry Kabler. N is for the National Federation of Temple Brotherhoods: and the seats we fill on its National Board. O is for the Opportunity we have as Brotherhood members to get involved in Temple and community activities. P is for our Plant Sales that raise money to fund many Temple activities and individual scholarships. Q is for Quest to seek out and pursue additional worthwhile projects R is for Ruach, the spirit that brotherhood members bring to their many projects that serve the Temple community and the needy in the greater Dallas community. S is for Scouting: We Sponsor Our own Boy Scout Troop #729 and Tembro Lodge that was built years ago and that was recently renovated with Brotherhood’s help. T is for the Temple Board and committees that our members serve taking active roles and fulfilling important responsibilities. U is for Ushering at Friday evening services under the able leadership of David Taub. V is for the Volunteers that we provide whenever asked by any arm of the Temple. V is also for Vogel Alcove, the child care facility for homeless children that Brotherhood assists will meals and special projects. W is for the Wheels our members use to deliver Meals-on-Wheels to the needy every month. X is for the Xtra effort put in by the Board and the Executive Committee of the Brotherhood - it is very much appreciated. Y is for the Youthfulness of our members - No matter their chronological ages, they are all young at heart. And last, but certainly not least, we're brought to… Z which is for Zest and Zeal, the hallmark of Brotherhood member’s approach to community service. |
